Where to go next

Preparation advice for the ESAT is often written from impression rather than from the document. The tables below are counted directly from Appendix 1 of the UAT-UK ESAT Content Specification for assessment in October 2026 and January 2027, which lists every assessable sub-topic. Counting the sub-topics under each heading gives a defensible estimate of where the marks actually sit.

Each module is 27 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, separately timed, with no calculator. Every module assumes the content of Mathematics 1; Mathematics 2 assumes the M topics and the MM topics.

Appendix 1 of the current specification numbers every assessable sub-topic. Every code in the tables below was checked against the published PDF one by one, with nothing missing and nothing extra.

The asymmetry is the point. Chemistry lists 89 sub-topics and Physics lists 32, so the same 27 questions are drawn from a syllabus almost three times wider in one module than the other. That does not make Chemistry harder, but it does mean a Physics candidate can reasonably expect to have met everything, and a Chemistry candidate cannot.

Statistics is 5.3% of Mathematics 1. Four sub-topics: charts and tables (M6.1), histograms and cumulative frequency (M6.2), averages and spread (M6.3), and scatter graphs and correlation (M6.4). On a 27-question module that is roughly one or two questions. Probability adds a further seven sub-topics, so the two together account for about one question in seven.

Mathematics 2: 39 sub-topics

Mathematics 2 contains no statistics and no probability at all. Searching the MM topic list returns nothing for statistics, probability, standard deviation, variance, sampling, expectation, random variables or correlation. If you are sitting Mathematics 2, none of that material is examinable, which is worth knowing before you spend revision time on it.

Physics: 32 sub-topics

Mechanics is the largest heading at 7 of 32 sub-topics, 22% of the module, and Electricity the smallest at 2. Physics is the narrowest of the three sciences, which is the strongest argument for choosing it over Chemistry or Biology where the choice is genuinely open: it is the science module where covering the whole specification before the sitting is realistic.

Quantitative chemistry is the largest single heading at 11 of 89 sub-topics, and it is also the most calculation heavy, which matters in a module sat without a calculator. Chemistry is the widest module in the test by some distance: 89 sub-topics across 17 headings, against 32 across 7 for Physics. Preparation that tries to cover it evenly will run out of time before it runs out of syllabus.

Biology: 34 sub-topics

Animal physiology is the largest heading at 5 of 34. Biology is nearly as narrow as Physics on paper, but it behaves differently in the test: in the official papers UAT-UK points candidates at, Biology questions are the longest to read and the most likely to be built around a figure. Practising it by reciting content rather than by working through data will not prepare you for that.

Questions written against a named sub-topic state the specification code they come from, so you can see at a glance what is examinable. A small number are labelled “beyond the specification”, kept for breadth and for interview preparation, and marked so they are never mistaken for exam content. Always check the current specification yourself before you rely on any summary, including this one.
