How these papers are made
Who writes these questions, and who checks them? 3 checks on every question
Who writes the questions, and how they are checked
Our researchers write them. Doctoral researchers and recent graduates in engineering, physics and mathematics at Oxford and Cambridge, who teach the subjects. Every question here was written by one of them.
Then every question is checked by software we developed ourselves, in house, for exactly this work: fixed rules where an answer has to be exact, and a review pass where the question needs judgement. This is the part we would point at first. Someone reading several hundred questions is sharp on the first and tired by the hundredth; the checks are not. On every question, every time a paper is built, they:
- work the question out again from scratch, without being told the intended answer, and have to arrive at the same one
- confirm no second option is also correct
- confirm every wrong option is one a student could really reach, and name the mistake that gets them there
Nothing goes into a paper until it has passed all of it. That is why the worked solutions can tell a student what reasoning led them to C, rather than only that the answer was B.
Understanding the ESAT
New to the ESAT? What it is and how it is scored, in 16 lines
The Engineering and Science Admissions Test (ESAT) is a computer-based admissions test set by UAT-UK, a collaboration between Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge, and delivered by Pearson VUE at test centres worldwide. It is used by Imperial College London, the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford and UCL for a range of engineering and science courses.
It replaced the older ENGAA and NSAA papers, and at Oxford it replaces the Physics Aptitude Test (PAT) for Engineering Science, Physics, Physics and Philosophy, and Biomedical Sciences. If you sat mock papers labelled ENGAA or NSAA, they remain useful practice: the ESAT draws on the same material.
How the test is built

How the score works

The anchor points are worth pausing on, because almost nothing else about the scale is published. A 4.5 is the middle of the field. A 9.0 is the top tenth. Everything between those two is where admissions decisions are actually made, and it is a narrow band.
Securing an offer requires rapid pattern recognition and execution under pressure. The worked solutions on this site focus on the fastest correct route to each answer, because at 89 seconds a question the method you choose decides the score more often than the mathematics you know.
Dates, cost and the rules
When is it, and what does it cost? 7 dates in the 2026 to 2027 cycle
There are two sittings in the cycle. Cambridge and Oxford applicants sit in October; the January window is for Imperial and UCL applicants, and at Cambridge and Oxford only for a small number of mature college and foundation year routes, so check your own course page before assuming you have a choice. Failing to register for a test your course requires can invalidate the application, and no university will make an exception for it.

Two of these are earlier than people expect. Access arrangements close on 14 September, a fortnight before the 28 September booking deadline, and the bursary closes on 21 September, a week before it. Both have to be granted before you can book, so a candidate who needs either one is working to a mid September deadline, not a late September one.

| Bursary | UAT-UK runs a bursary scheme for UK candidates in financial hardship, and it covers the full fee. It has to be approved before you book, applications are reviewed within about five working days, and the deadline is earlier than the booking deadline. |

Choosing your modules
Which modules should you sit? What 4 universities ask for
Mathematics 1 is fixed. The two remaining choices are where candidates lose marks before the test even begins, and you cannot change your modules on test day, so the decision is made at booking.
Many courses specify which modules you must take. Where they do, there is no choice to make: take what the course names. Check your own course page before booking, because these requirements are revised between cycles.
Who requires the ESAT, and which modules
Four universities require the ESAT for 2027 entry. The tables below are transcribed from UAT-UK's own Course List for 2027 entry, last updated April 2026, which is the only document that lists every ESAT course at every institution in one place. Durham, LSE and Warwick appear on that list too, but for the TMUA and the TARA, not the ESAT, which is worth knowing because some university pages name all seven institutions without separating the tests.
Two rules from that document decide bookings and are easy to miss. If you apply to two ESAT courses and one of them names compulsory modules, those compulsory modules govern your booking, even if the other course leaves the choice open. And module selection cannot be changed after booking: it means cancelling and rebooking, subject to whatever test centre slots are left.

At Oxford the ESAT has replaced the Physics Aptitude Test. Oxford's own Physics department now calls the PAT its previous admissions test, and the PAT archive remains worthwhile preparation for interview even though the test itself is retired.

If you genuinely have a free choice
- Take Mathematics 2 if you are able to. It is pure mathematics with no statistics and no probability at all, it overlaps heavily with Mathematics 1, and preparation for one improves the other. It is also the module where a strong candidate can most reliably separate themselves.
- Pick the science you are furthest ahead in, not the one you enjoy most. The syllabus is fixed and shallow; what varies is how much of it you have already met.
- Check the overlap with your A-level timetable. A module whose content you are covering in class in September is far cheaper to prepare than one you finished last year.
- Do not choose a module because it looks easier. Scores are reported per module and read in context; there is no advantage in an easy module you have not prepared.
Module requirements and test dates are set by the universities and change between admissions cycles. Treat everything above as a starting point and confirm it against the official pages linked at the foot of this page before you book.
What the specification actually says
What is actually examinable? 5 modules, 270 sub-topics
Preparation advice for the ESAT is often written from impression rather than from the document. The tables below are counted directly from Appendix 1 of the UAT-UK ESAT Content Specification for assessment in October 2026 and January 2027, which lists every assessable sub-topic. Counting the sub-topics under each heading gives a defensible estimate of where the marks actually sit.
Each module is 27 multiple-choice questions in 40 minutes, separately timed, with no calculator. Every module assumes the content of Mathematics 1; Mathematics 2 assumes the M topics and the MM topics.

The asymmetry is the point. Chemistry lists 89 sub-topics and Physics lists 32, so the same 27 questions are drawn from a syllabus almost three times wider in one module than the other. That does not make Chemistry harder, but it does mean a Physics candidate can reasonably expect to have met everything, and a Chemistry candidate cannot.

Statistics is 5.3% of Mathematics 1. Four sub-topics: charts and tables (M6.1), histograms and cumulative frequency (M6.2), averages and spread (M6.3), and scatter graphs and correlation (M6.4). On a 27-question module that is roughly one or two questions. Probability adds a further seven sub-topics, so the two together account for about one question in seven.

Mathematics 2 contains no statistics and no probability at all. Searching the MM topic list returns nothing for statistics, probability, standard deviation, variance, sampling, expectation, random variables or correlation. If you are sitting Mathematics 2, none of that material is examinable, which is worth knowing before you spend revision time on it.

Mechanics is the largest heading at 7 of 32 sub-topics, 22% of the module, and Electricity the smallest at 2. Physics is the narrowest of the three sciences, which is the strongest argument for choosing it over Chemistry or Biology where the choice is genuinely open: it is the science module where covering the whole specification before the sitting is realistic.

Quantitative chemistry is the largest single heading at 11 of 89 sub-topics, and it is also the most calculation heavy, which matters in a module sat without a calculator. Chemistry is the widest module in the test by some distance: 89 sub-topics across 17 headings, against 32 across 7 for Physics. Preparation that tries to cover it evenly will run out of time before it runs out of syllabus.

Animal physiology is the largest heading at 5 of 34. Biology is nearly as narrow as Physics on paper, but it behaves differently in the test: in the official papers UAT-UK points candidates at, Biology questions are the longest to read and the most likely to be built around a figure. Practising it by reciting content rather than by working through data will not prepare you for that.
Questions written against a named sub-topic state the specification code they come from, so you can see at a glance what is examinable. A small number are labelled “beyond the specification”, kept for breadth and for interview preparation, and marked so they are never mistaken for exam content. Always check the current specification yourself before you rely on any summary, including this one.
How these papers are built
How close is this to the real thing? 648 official questions, measured
Most preparation material is written from an impression of the test. This library is written against a measurement of it. UAT-UK publishes no ESAT past papers, but it does point candidates at the ENGAA and NSAA Section 1 papers from 2016 to 2023, which is the closest thing to a real corpus that exists. UAT-UK describes them as papers that “contain questions of the type found in the ESAT”, and notes that it has marked the questions in them that fall outside the ESAT specification. Those 648 questions across 16 papers were parsed and measured, every question counted, and the tables below are that measurement.
A note on the instrument, because it decides whether any of this means anything. A stem's length is counted with every run of mathematics collapsing to one word, so $x^2 + 3x - 4$ counts as one and not five. Counting it the other way makes an algebra question look twice the length of a prose one. The same rule is used on both sides of every comparison here.
What a real question looks like

Two things in that table surprise almost everyone. A real Biology question runs to a median of 80 words and 45% of them carry a figure, against 22 words and 4% for Mathematics 2. They are the same 27 questions in the same 40 minutes, but they are not the same kind of reading. And the 90th percentile column is the one that decides your pacing: in Biology one question in ten runs past 165 words, which at 89 seconds a question is most of your time gone before you have done any biology.

Only 18% of real questions offer five options. The commonest is eight. This matters more than it looks: on a five-option paper a blind guess pays 20%, but across the real distribution it pays about 15%. A raw mark on any five-option mock, including the ones on this page, is therefore a mild overestimate of what the same performance scores on the day. It is worth knowing rather than discovering.

Every module here reads shorter than the real thing, and Chemistry and Biology carry far fewer figures. That is a real limitation and it points one way: use these to drill method and speed, and use the official ENGAA and NSAA papers to practise reading a long stem under time. The gap is largest in Biology and Chemistry, which is exactly where a candidate who has only ever practised on short questions gets hurt.
Figure share is detected from the stem, because a paper has to tell a candidate that a diagram is there. That method understates Chemistry, whose figures are often structural formulae printed as the options rather than referred to in the stem, so treat the Chemistry figure numbers as a floor. Every other number in these tables is counted from the questions themselves.
Practice sets
50 questions in 2 sets, five in each of the five modules. Each one is written to the depth of a question in a real paper: it sets up a situation rather than stating a calculation, and it carries the full worked solution, the method behind it and the mistake it punishes.
No two questions in a set share a family, so five questions in a module are five different methods. Start here if you want to see the standard the test is actually set at.
Why five questions, not a full paper
A practice set is a short, focused sitting at ESAT pace: five questions in one module, each worked in full, drawn from the same question bank that writes the unseen papers schools commission from this site. Five is enough to test a method and short enough to sit between two lessons. The four mock papers publish longer samples at the same standard. A complete module, 27 questions to the clock, is what a school commissions. Keeping the free sets short is also what keeps the commissioned papers unseen: a question published here is retired from every school pack, so the bank is spent carefully rather than emptied onto the site.

They are not licensed for a school, college or tutoring provider to print and run with a class, to republish or resell, or to fold into a course sold by another provider. A school sitting a timed mock is welcome to the free sample pack, which comes with mark schemes and a syllabus reference, and a paper written for your own candidates and used nowhere else is a commissioned pack.
Frequently asked questions
The questions candidates and parents ask most often, answered from the official specification and the universities' own pages rather than from impression. Every answer is expanded on somewhere above.
How many ESAT modules do I sit?
Mathematics 1 is compulsory for everyone. You then sit two further modules from Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, so most candidates sit three modules and 120 minutes in total. The exception is Imperial's Dyson School of Design Engineering, which asks for Mathematics 1 and Mathematics 2 only. Many courses specify which modules you must take, and you cannot change them on test day, so check your own course page before you book.
Can I use a calculator in the ESAT?
No. There is no calculator and no formula sheet in any module. Every arithmetic step has to be done by hand, which is why the method you choose matters more than raw ability: at roughly 89 seconds a question, a route that avoids heavy arithmetic is usually the difference between finishing and not.
Is there negative marking in the ESAT?
No. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, so you should never leave a question blank. If you are running out of time, a guess is strictly better than nothing.
How is the ESAT scored, and what counts as a good score?
Each module is scored from 1.0 to 9.0 and reported to one decimal place. There is no pass mark and no published threshold: universities read the scores alongside the rest of your application, and what is competitive varies by course and by year. Treat any specific number you see quoted online as a rumour rather than a target.
Should I choose Mathematics 2 or a science module?
Where your course specifies the modules there is no choice to make. Where you genuinely have one, take Mathematics 2 if you are able to: it is pure mathematics with no statistics and no probability at all, it overlaps heavily with Mathematics 1, so preparing for one improves the other. If you take a science, pick the one you are furthest ahead in rather than the one you enjoy most, and never pick a module because it looks easier.
When is the ESAT sat, and which sitting should I choose?
There are two sittings in the cycle: 12 to 16 October 2026 and 4 to 8 January 2027. If you are applying to Cambridge or Oxford you must sit the October test. Imperial applicants may use either window. Registration closes in advance of each sitting, and failing to register for a test your course requires can invalidate the application, so confirm the deadline on the official UAT-UK page.
Is the ESAT the same as the PAT, ENGAA or NSAA?
The ESAT replaced the older ENGAA and NSAA papers, and at Oxford it replaces the Physics Aptitude Test for Engineering Science, Physics, Physics and Philosophy, and Biomedical Sciences. Past ENGAA, NSAA and PAT papers remain useful practice because the ESAT draws on the same material, and the PAT archive is still worth working through for interview preparation.
How many mock papers are there on this site?
Four mock papers, each covering all five modules, plus ten practice sets. A module is the unit you actually sit, so count in modules: each paper page publishes a sample of its module, worked question by question, with a timed test at the top, and each practice set is a short sitting at the same standard. All of it is free. A module runs to 27 questions complete, and a complete module is what a school commissions rather than something published here. If you are planning homework between sessions, one module of one paper is the natural unit, and a practice set fits between two lessons.
How should I use the worked solutions on this site?
Work a module through untimed first, reading the full method rather than only checking the answer, then re-sit a different module against the clock once the methods are familiar. The solutions are deliberately longer than the time the real question allows, because they are written to teach the fastest correct route rather than to model exam pace.
What does the ESAT cost, and is there help with the fee?
The test costs £78 for candidates in the UK and the Republic of Ireland and £133 for candidates elsewhere. UAT-UK runs a bursary scheme for UK candidates in financial hardship which covers the full fee, but it has to be approved before you book, and its deadline falls a week before the booking deadline. If the fee is a problem, apply for the bursary first and book afterwards, not the other way round.
Which universities actually require the ESAT?
Four, for 2027 entry: Imperial College London, the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford and UCL. Durham, LSE and Warwick appear alongside them as UAT-UK institutions, but they use the TMUA and the TARA rather than the ESAT. The definitive list of which course at which university needs which test, and which modules, is UAT-UK's own course list, and the tables above are transcribed from it.
Can I sit the ESAT twice, or use last year's score?
No to both. You can take the test only once in an admissions cycle, and a score from a previous cycle is not made available to institutions, so a reapplication means sitting it again.
When do results come out, and can I choose who sees them?
Results are released about four weeks after the sitting: 16 November 2026 for the October window and 8 February 2027 for the January window. They appear in your UAT-UK account and are sent automatically to the institutions on your UCAS application that use the test for the course you applied to. You cannot withhold a score from a participating institution.
What are access arrangements, and when is the deadline?
Extra time, a separate room, a reader and similar adjustments. You apply through your online account with supporting evidence, normally a letter from your school's SENCo on headed paper. The deadline is 14 September 2026 at 6pm for the October sitting, a fortnight before the booking deadline most people have in mind, because UAT-UK say confirmation can take ten working days and you cannot book a seat until it is granted. UAT-UK do not tell universities that you had access arrangements.
Can I change my modules after I have booked?
No. Module selection cannot be changed or added after booking: you would have to cancel the test and rebook, and rebooking depends on test centre availability, so your preferred date and centre may no longer exist. If you are applying to more than one ESAT course and one of them names compulsory modules, those compulsory modules decide your booking.
Do you write mock papers for schools?
Yes. A free sample pack is published on this site, the first 10 of the 27 questions in each of the five modules, with worked solutions, mark schemes, answer sheets and a syllabus reference, and any school is welcome to sit a cohort on it. Because it is published, students preparing seriously may have met it, so I also write unseen packs to order: drawn from a bank, recorded against your school, never issued to another school and never published here. Details are in the section for schools above.

The universities
- Imperial College London, the ESAT. The clearest of the three on module requirements: it names the modules department by department, and it is the only one of Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial that lets you sit the January window.
- University of Cambridge, admissions tests. Lists which courses require the ESAT; the individual course pages carry the module detail.
- Oxford, Engineering Science and the ESAT and Oxford Physics, the ESAT. The Physics department page also keeps the PAT past papers online, which remain useful preparation even though the PAT itself has been replaced.
- UCL Faculty of Engineering: the ESAT. UCL requires it for two courses only, BEng and MEng Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and uses the score alongside the rest of the UCAS application rather than as a threshold.

Both are built against the official material rather than against an impression of it. The stem lengths, the number of worked steps and the share of questions carrying a figure are measured from the ENGAA and NSAA papers UAT-UK points candidates at, and each paper is commissioned to match that distribution question by question. Every question is then independently re-derived: the key confirmed as uniquely correct, and every wrong option traced to a specific named mistake that produces that exact value.
One limit, stated rather than buried: these are printed papers and the real ESAT is sat on screen at a Pearson VUE centre, so a printed mock trains the mathematics and the pacing but not the interface. Use UAT-UK's free on-screen practice at least once for that. Each pack also ships with a page listing its measured differences from the real test.
