What is in Paper 1

Every one of the 25 questions published here carries a full worked solution: five from each of the five modules, chosen so that nothing on this page is incomplete. The rest of the paper is written for one school at a time and is not published, which is what makes a commissioned pack worth commissioning.

If you want practice with no gaps in it at all, the ten practice sets are complete throughout. Why we publish the gap rather than quietly close it is explained in our Quality Assurance standards.

Where to go next

  • Sit a subject against the clock: each subject page of the four full papers opens with a timed test of every question on the page, the same shape as one sitting of the real test.
  • Recognise the method before you calculate: the ESAT Shortcut Library holds 105 methods, each linked to every question that drills it.
  • Check what is actually examinable: the specification tables count every assessable sub-topic from the official document.
  • Revise formulas and exam tactics: the ESAT Essentials guide.
  • Work one sub-topic at a time: each practice set hub lists the specification sub-topic every one of its questions was written against.
  • Teaching a cohort rather than sitting the test? A free ESAT sample pack holds 10 of the 27 questions in every module, with the worked solutions and mark schemes in full, and unseen packs are written for individual schools.

For individual preparation. The free question sets on this site are for a candidate working on their own. They are not licensed for a school, college or tutoring provider to print and run with a class, to republish or resell, or to fold into a course sold by another provider. A school sitting a timed mock is welcome to the free sample pack, which comes with mark schemes and a syllabus reference, and a paper written for your own candidates and used nowhere else is a commissioned pack.

Where to go from here

You have worked a full module. Everything below is free and these are the steps that follow it.

One-to-one places are limited and taken by application, not by the hour. This site is independent of UAT-UK, which administers the ESAT, and of every university that uses it; nothing here is endorsed by them, and the official specification and past papers remain the final word.
